PRESIDENT'S DAY - HONORING IKE

Today is President's Day in the United States and we have had several outstanding Presidents in the history of this great nation. Most have believed in God. Eisenhower fits into that category.

During his presidency, he secretly met with Churchhill one night in the White House to sign a treaty with Turkey. The American public had no knowledge the Prime Minister of England had arrived in D.C. during the night.

However, one person from the sleepy town of Wrens, Georgia did know and phoned the White House to speak with the President. The switchboard refused to put her through, however, the woman revealed she knew exactly who was visiting the President, what room they were in, and the treaty about to be signed.

Her message was simply stated: Tell the President not to sign a treaty with Turkey.

It wasn't long after that, the FBI showed up on her doorstep thinking she might be a spy.

They were bewildered to find an elderly country woman who told them she'd been in prayer with God Almighty. He'd told her to make the call to the President and to warn him.

Eisenhower listened.

Mamie Eisenhower later wrote her a personal thank you note.

Eisenhower's Views on Religion and Politics: The words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance during the Eisenhower administration.

Quotations: "In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war." -- Flag Day speech, signing bill authorizing addition of the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance, 14 June 1954

"We are particularly thankful to you for your part in the movement to have the words 'under God' added to our Pledge of Allegiance. These words will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded. For the contribution which your organization has made to this cause, we must be genuinely grateful." -- message to the Knights of Columbus meeting in Louisville, 17 August 1954

Eisenhower became the first President to join a church while in office.

During his inauguration, his Bible was marked by two verses: Psalm 127:1 "Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain."

2 Chron 7:14 "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

I can't help but wonder if the Wrens, GA "spy" experience changed the lives of the FBI men or the others involved.
